The Solace
The Solace
God spare you the need, but should one of your loved ones take sick—mortal sick—and need a place from which to die, you could do worse than The Solace...
We’re in Big Piney and Little Piney, two hollows just outside the town of Garnet in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. It’s 1989. Thanksgiving’s just around the corner. Over the course of five days, we’ll follow a handful of characters whose paths cross at a local hospice called The Solace. Stricken relatives and seasoned professionals, they are called upon to attend the dying. Through chapters that interweave points-of-view, their fragmented stories become one.

If Elizabeth Strout got together with Eudora Welty for tea, they might have cooked up these stories...
Five teeming days-in-the-life of those who help the dying. Sounds grim, but it’s really sad-funny or funny-sad, depending on who’s doing the talking...
I can’t stop thinking about these characters, wondering if they’re all right...
I’ve never been to the Appalachian mountains, but I have coped with losing family members and this book somehow captured the strange things that happen in a place where dying is done...
